How to Handle Your Pet on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a great time to reconnect with family and friends and to celebrate the happiness that we have had this year. The traditional Thanksgiving meal fills your kitchen with delicious, tempting aromas.

This holiday can become a medical emergency for your dog. It's a good time to check out food that can be dangerous to your dog before things get too hectic in your house. We have created a list of some common doggie snack no-no's .

What to Avoid Feeding Your Dog in the Thanksgiving Season?

  • Fatty foods— fat-loaded foods can cause veterinary pancreatitis. It is best to keep your dogs away from gravy bowls!

  • Bones-be sure that the bones go out to the trash, whether you are planning to serve turkey, prime rib, or ham. Bones can cause blockage and perforation sometimes requiring surgery.

  • Chocolate– can be toxic in sufficient quantities.

  • Alliums (AKA onions, nuts, leeks, shallots)–these fragrant ingredients are yummy but can cause trouble in our dog’s tummy!

  • Grapes and raisins – frequently used in salads and side dishes, grapes and raisins can cause your dog serious health problems.

Treats for Your Pet on Thanksgiving

  • Diversion Bowl- Fill a bowl with acceptable dog delights if you have many guests coming and going during your holidays. and remind them not to share food with your dog

  • Canned Food- Treat your dog by adding few tablespoons of canned food like pumpkin (NOT the pie filling!) or green beans.

We wish you a happy and safe Thanksgiving with your family, friends and pets.
