Keep Your Pets Happy This Holiday season
The most beautiful time of the year is the holiday season! Fun and entertainment, visitors and gifts, friends and family... they all play a part in celebrating the holidays, no matter which holidays you observe - St. Nicholas Day, Immaculate Conception Day, Bodhi Day (Rohatsu), Feast Day of Our Lady Guadalupe, Hanukkah, Yule, Christmas, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, Zarathosht Diso or Festivus (the holiday for the rest of us).
While the December holiday are a time of joy, we have to look out for our pets. Some things to consider….
Don’t let your dogs eat things they shouldn’t. Encourage your guests not to feed them table scraps. A partial list of foods to avoid for your dogs: Alcohol, avocado, chocolate, coffee, caffeine, citrus, coconut & coconut oil, grapes & raisins, milk, nuts, alliums such as onions & garlic, raw or undercooked meat & eggs, bones, salt and salty foods, xylitol (artificial sweetener), and yeast dough. Should you need more information, contact ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. In case of emergency, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Make sure your dog has a place to escape the crowd. Confining your dog to a specific room or in their kennel (hopefully a really pretty one from Kennel and Crate) can reduce stress levels for your dogs.
Tips for safe decorations:
Anchor your tree well
Use unbreakable and non-toxic decorations
Sweep up needles frequently
Keep cables out of reach or use a cable guard
Remove broken decorations
Avoid tiny decorations, ribbon and tinsel.
Don't use edible ornaments
Avoid mistletoe–plants such as Mistletoe, poinsettia and holly can be toxic
Do not leave any candles in reach of your pets–we all know that anywhere their paws can stop.
Don’t forget to decorate your kennel but do so safely!
